I am thinking of starting my 7 year old son (2nd grade) this year on the Horizons 1 BOOK 2? Do you think this would cause an issue with the way the program works. He knows pretty much all the basics, writing numbers, etc that would be in student book 1, but needs some extra practice on double digit adding, etc before moving onto the multiplication, etc in Horizons 2. Also do you feel that the teachers guidebook is mandatory (in another sense super helpful and worth spending the extra $$?)
Any insight on this would be helpful ![]() |

Re: Those that use Horizon Math?
I can help with this one!
1. I think it would be fine to start with book 2. After taking the summer off, one of my kids will be starting book 2 (of a different grade) when we start in September. It's a totally smooth transition between books 1 and 2. 2. I only bought the teacher's guide my first year (I thought I had to), and I NEVER used it. I haven't bought any since, and my kids are learning math just fine! In the older grades I might, but for early elementary math- I don't think it needs a guide. (Although if you want it, I could send you the grade 1 teacher's guide FFS- but I don't think you'd need it.) Let me know if you have any other questions! I've used the Horizons math K through 3.

Re: Those that use Horizon Math?
Thanks so much for your help
It is helpful to know about the smooth transition between books 1 and 2. I would love your teachers guide FFS to look over and see if the program will be right for us, that would be so great! Thanks..just PM me the cost of shipping and your paypal

Re: Those that use Horizon Math?
ITA! It would be just fine starting with book 2! I don't think I've ever used the teacher guides for K-2nd... But the teacher guides do have the student worksheets for extra practice in them... Something we also didn't ever use... But you might want to.

Re: Those that use Horizon Math?
Another one agreeing that it should be fine here! We are just starting Horizons 2nd next week, and I definitely don't see any reason for the teacher's manual. I think it will work smoothly. That's the beauty of homeschooling...your child can work at their level in each subject individually.
