I'm not a homeschooler but thought this would be the best place to post. My 4yo ds is smart as a whip and just soaks up info. We go to the library and every few days and get tons of books but their selection of educational DVDs are pretty boring. My ds loves learning about animals and how the world works in general. I can't spend all day reading to him, however much i'd like to. I'm looking for some videos that are educational but also engaging for a 4yo with a relatively short attention span. Thanks so much.

Re: Rec's for kids educational videos?
Our children LOVE Popular Mechanics for kids. It is an educational video series made in Canada, infact that actress Alisha Cuthbert is in them back when she was a kid. We checked them out ALL the time and finally bought them all. They present sort of like news segments so are good for a kid. We also own every episode of Mr. Wizard. Do you have cable/satelite? We often find great stuff for our kids that way. I do tend to DVR and check it first because you just never know... My son LOVES Dangerous Encounters with Brady Barr. That is Avery's hero

Re: Rec's for kids educational videos?
I was going to suggest the leapfrog videos and also the Magic Schoolbus videos, but I'm not sure if that is what you are looking for here.

Re: Rec's for kids educational videos?
Me too...I got the letter factory for my kids, my older 2 are going to be 4 next month, and they love all the leap frog shows and I'd heard this recommended a lot already, and it really is starting to teach them letter sounds! we have a few more, there's a words factory one, a school one, a numbers one, a math one, another letter one...they love them. And my DS is a short attention span sometimes too.

Thanks ladies! I'll check these out. Not sure about the leapfrog ones, maybe the math. Ds knows his sounds and can add on his fingers. I'm worried about over preparing him for school, so I'm think more along the lines of specific topics, animals, dinosaurs. Solar system, earth, weather, stuff like that, instead of actual academics. He's going into preschool this year and he already knows what he needs to for kindergarten.

Re: Rec's for kids educational videos?
I would look into Netflix streaming. There are tons of animal and sciency documentaries, and you can preview them to see if it is something that your child would be interested in. $8/month for streaming only (and an internet connection).

I found popular mechanics and magic school bus DVDs at the library. I also got an animal atlas DVD on amazon. We have netflix and mainly stream through the Xbox. The categories are limited. Unless I know the name of what I'm searching for, it's kind if hard. There's a family movies and kids tv categories. I haven't seen any education kids specials on there. I'll look on my computer, I think it has more categories that way.

Re: Rec's for kids educational videos?
We love rock n learn movies and we have old imax movies on netflix. Some don't go over well at all but most of the animal ones my son likes to watch.

Recently, we watched one on origami (Between the Folds). I wanted to find a boring one just to get the boy I babysit to sleep (boring tv works like a charm I have found...) and DD, who is 3, got really interested in it and now folds her paper after coloring it!! It's so cute.
