Ring Slings
DS is 1yr and around 24lbs. I have a Pikkolo that I love, but I often find myself with him on my hip. In the last week, I have attended two functions and held him on my hip for HOURS. I need my hands free sometimes, so I was thinking a ring sling would be a quick solution. I don't like the Pikkolo in the hip carry. So, are all ring slings created equal? I see some on Etsy for reasonable prices, but are they ok? Also, how do I figure out what size I need? I wear a 2X top, if that helps. TIA!

Go to sleepingbaby.net. Best ring slings ever, and Jan is so wonderful to work with!

Not all of them are the same. I also recommend sleepy baby as well as linen.

I got a SPB as my first RS and love it. The size is really about the length of the tail. I am 5'7" and have a M. The tail is pretty long. If you wanted a shorter tail i would get a small. The SPB website will also talk about sizing. Y

Re: Ring Slings
At 24 lb you probably want a double-layer linen or silk or a wrap-conversion ring sling. I found that past about 22 lb (DS is now 27 lb), a single-layer linen or regular cotton fabric sling was not supportive enough. Sleeping Baby Productions (SBP) does wrap conversion slings and double linens by request and Sakura Bloom makes wonderful supportive double linens and double silks. You can find both brands used on the baby carrier board here or on the ring sling FSOT at TBW. Other good brands are Comfy Joey and Kalea baby.
I don't know too much about Etsy sellers --- most of the ones I've seen seem to make single layer cotton slings. If you get something off Etsy make sure they are using genuine SlingRings (a particular brand of ring designed and tested specifically for ring slings) for safety's sake. Ring sling size is mostly a function of how long a tail you like. SBP has a good chart for lengths here: http://www.sleepingbaby.net/size.php. HTH. Ringslings are awesome, especially for toddlers who are up and down a lot. When they're up they can see everything, and when down you don't have to haul around a bulky SSC! |

Re: Ring Slings
I think a ring sling is exactly what you are looking for. I agree about making sure that whoever you get it from uses Sling Rings, they are tested and designed specifically for slings. I use a double layer cotton with my little ones, my 2 yr old is about 25/30lbs (when I carry her, which isn't often anymore between her wanting to be down walking and me being pg) For me one of the biggest factors in choosing a sling is the shoulder. I highly recommend wider shoulders, like the pleats SBP does, in order to spread the weight properly across the shoulder and back. You don't want it creeping up the shoulder and pulling at your neck.

Re: Ring Slings
I have a pikkolo and an unpadded ring sling (WAHM made) and together they meet all my baby carrying needs. I used the pikkolo for longer more intensive trips like the mall or farmer's market. I use the ring sling for a hip carry at home or when I'm just sitting around as I find I can place her more comfortably to sit. My ring sling has a nice long tail I use to maintain modesty while NIP

Re: Ring Slings
Thank you! I was looking at the SBP site and liked the denim slings. Does anyone know anything about Joyful Rose slings? I picked up one for $10 to try before investing in a nicer sling.

Joyful Rose I am not familiar with and I also couldn't find them listed in the TBW ring sling vendor reviews. If you post a pic of the shoulder someone might be able to tell you what kind of shoulder it is, which could help you with picking out another sling that is similar or not. Another brand to consider if you are looking at the $40 range is Zanytoes. They use a gathered shoulder which I like, but it is quite different from the SBP shoulder (which is pleated and has more structure). |
