Re: Farmin'/Homesteading Weekly Chat Aug 5-11
Amanda- Awesome! Sounds like you definitely had a good day!
Mamajoe - Mercy, lady! You've been busy. ![]() I got all on my list finished but the soap making. Just ran out of time and DH ended up washing taters right after supper while DS was awake and playing in mud puddles. DS LOVED it. lol. The bathtub was pretty disgusting looking last night tho. I found out last night that I'll be going into the bad part of the town with my sister on Saturday. We will be walking out on the streets and going from door to door. I am kind of against the whole door to door thing...If someone came to my door trying to get my kids to go with them to hear a Bible story, I wouldn't let them. I personally believe in the Bible but I wouldn't let my kids go with some random person knocking at my door to spread the gospel. I'm a little annoyed that I didn't know this until last night and I already said I'd go. The only reason I'm still going is to keep and eye on her and make sure she is safe. My DS WILL NOT be going now. He will be going to visit Gramma and Pappy with his Daddy at the home farm. Ok, maybe I am seriously annoyed. I'm not a "city folk" I am a country girl and I HATE being anywhere more crowded than our small hometown. I don't want to go. Today, mom is coming up...she and I don't always get along but she seems to be on a "high" right now so it should be ok. I feel like she has a mix of bi-polar and narcisstic personality disorders. She can get crazy, but she seems ok right now so it should be alright. We are grabbing the lunch special...maybe at Olive Garden? Haven't been there in almost a year...we don't eat out much except for a quick fast food lunch or supper on the way to the home farm sometimes. I should be able to keep that under $12 for Ds and I both. Then we are going to the P.O., natural food store and the outlets. I need to keep my spending below $100 today, so we'll see. Before she gets here I plan to fold laundry, do dishes, toss supper in the crockpot, tidy the house a little and make laundry detergent. Today is an easy day. Tomorrow, my nose is back at the grind though! DS is up...a lot earlier than normal. Better finish this coffee quick and go get him and get started! He loves helping with laundry though he's a lot less help than what I like...he pulls clothes back out of drawers and baskets and climbs on the pile...and jumps off. (I fold it on our bed). Have a great day, ladies!!

Re: Farmin'/Homesteading Weekly Chat Aug 5-11
Oh mercy sakes...I just found out my mom's on her meds again and her "high" is a "low" as of last night.
This should be a fun trip. -insert sarcasm here- Prayers are much appreciated...I might just lose it on her today. I wish she'd go get help!

Quote:
is right! that is a LOT of blueberries. Is it bad that i am secretly happy the berries are done here? I did 10 gallons of raspberries and only 5 Of saskatoons (i wanted more, but kiddo wasn't so thrilled with being in the patch this year. Oh well, they will be back next year! ) i've only made 18 jars of jam and the rest have just been shoved in the freezer. I'll figure out what to do with them later![]() Our distiller blew up last night so not sure what to do about all the blanching i need to do today. Do any of you ladies blanch with well water? Our water is fine to drink (high in sodium) but we don't normally cook with it because it makes the pasta go soggy and potatoes go brown. Since blanching is so quick it should be okay right?Eta: wow thats a lot of smilies in one message. Lol

Re: Farmin'/Homesteading Weekly Chat Aug 5-11
YOu could do a steam blanch. the minnerals would stay in the bottom of your pot and the veggies steam in a basket. I use one of my bigger pots and a collander and a round bakinng sheet (in place of the lid) to steam a lot of things.
Dani- it's not always easy dealinng with people with mood disorders. My sister is bipolar, has been since a teen. She's now 27 (soon to be 28) and has only been on treatments for 9 months (and I haven't seen her in 2 years). She's always been VERY difficult. Have actually enjoyed talking with her on the phone these last few months.MamaJoe: I may just stick the blackberries in the freezer and deal with them later. Luckily they are 'just' starting to ripen. But it feels so good to have 'down time' after all that. I actually stopped by and had coffe and a chat with my mom for 2 hours! Was nice. She's 3 miles down the road but she owns 28 acres (on the same stream as us. unfortunatly the trail system is between us and the stream frontage we own. If we want a nice view we have to deal with ATV noise and onlookers). Thier house is about 100 feet from the stream, it's sown in quite a ways from the road (whereas our house is VERY close to the road) so I find it super peacefull down there, not to mention gorgeous. I guess we are supposed to get a ton of rain sat. which sucks because I was planning on cleaning out the coop and turning the compost pile that day since friday DH is buying me a pitch fork. So I'll just have to use the shovel and clean the coop friday morning. Have a few chores around here then heading ove to the trailer to get some work done there. DH will meet us after work. Tomorrow I have my annual physical. Going to see if I can get a referral to a chiropractor for my back. Than back to the trailer for mor work. Saturday I'll see if I can get some work done on mom's sweater (already working on x-mas presents), Do a little sewing and/or pattern drafting. ODD's been designing her own school clothes. She came up with an idea for knee length shorts with balck, grey and orangy red daimoned cher print. Told her I'd never find fabric like that, and what do you know I found the ugliest fabric that's almost an exact match at Mardens for $1/yd and snatched a yard of it, showed it to her and she was THRILLED! She's also getting a few colored streaks put in her hair (multiple colors) before school starts. We let her for her b-day last yeatr and she got a purple and blue chunk done and loved it. She wants to do it before school this year so we told her she could either pay for it with her allowance she's saved or it can be an early gift.

Re: Farmin'/Homesteading Weekly Chat Aug 5-11
oh, and I need to sand blocks. I'm taking the scrap cuts that DH was going to throw away and sanding them and then rubbing them with butcher block oil to make blocks for YDD for x-mas. Might paint or carve some letters or something in them too, unsure.

Re: Farmin'/Homesteading Weekly Chat Aug 5-11
Okay the upside to a cranky kid? It almost always ends with her in bed early (right now) to avoid her becoming the outlet for my frustration (despite her peing the cause
) and my house take the brunt ot if! Yay! Clean house. Lol. Pent up energy equals a qucik clean!
