OP how old is DS? Any chance he's teething? DD gets really, really red... right before she stops sleeping (sigh) and pops out a tooth or two.
I love CJ's, but find that for an already-red bum lanolin is the best (and totally CD safe, which is nice). Just the purple tube stuff, a good schmear at bedtime and she's clear in the AM.
Do try going to the next rise snap (if you're in OS pockets) as PP suggested - this worked for us as well.
Try adding some baking soda to the bath water - this is supposed to be very calming.

He is 1. He's perpetually teething but doesn't seem to be going through anything more horrific than what's normal. He's spent the last 5 months with his fist in his mouth.

We're on the medium rise for his pockets. When is a 'normal' time to unsnap all of them? Sometimes I feel his dipes sit way too low and I should unsnap everything, but then at his age and his smallish weight, won't he outgrow all his diapers?

I'll look into it! thanks. GMDs are too expensive. And of course even with their sale right now I'd want the no-snap kind and they don't have it in brown edge. Never heard of dream-eze.. will search now.

Try the GMD b/s/t page on Facebook. I'm sure you can find mamas who are destashing to buy organics or to change sizes during the sale.

For the powder: I just use the Johnson & Johnson's cornstarch + zinc oxide. The label might say "medicated," I don't remember, but if you look on the label on the back it will have those ingredients listed.

I would do outside naked time in the evenings, if at all possible (i.e. if you have a semi-private yard etc.) Obviously you're not going to do nekkid time on the streets of a downtown urban area...
