Re: Corporal punishment in school

They still do it in all of our local schools and you can bet your bottom dollar I would sign the form saying the school is allowed to paddle my children . We homeschool so it is a non issue, but if my child was acting so terribly that the school felt the need to paddle them than so be it. It takes a LOT of disobedience with multiple warnings , write -ups and in school suspension for them to get to the point that they are going to paddle a child. If my child goes through all that and still does not know how to behave than I have failed as a parent.

Re: Corporal punishment in school

It is still allowed in Alabama but I don't know of any teachers that actually do it. I'm not against spanking but I am against people spanking my son. Traditional punishments don't work for him due to his special needs. He does best with positive discipline although when he is acting really ugly (hitting & biting) I tell him he can't be around people until he can treat them better. I got him to wear his glasses because I told everyone to tell him how handsome he looks when he wears them. After the tenth person praised him all of a sudden wearing his glasses was something he wanted to do.

It is legal here, but our district has a policy that we do not use it.

Re: Corporal punishment in school

Really? I thought that went out in the 60s!
I went to school in the 70's/80's and it was long gone by then.

Wow. They didn't even have that when I went to school. I would not be ok with that and my kids are going to a school that is big on discipline. I am fine with having clear consequences and I will not be a helicopter parent but I don't think physical punishment is ok especially from another adult that isn't related. I don't think that is a good message to send that other adults can hurt or touch them like that.

Yep, totally legal. Our county and city school systems still do it, too. Here you have to sign consent or non-consent, also. I had one in '99, so not too long ago, and my sister just graduated in 2010 and kids were still paddled then. I will not allow it, though.

Interesting I just looked it up and New Jersey was the first state to make it illegal in 1867. I think that is pretty cool and no wonder it seems such a foreign concept to me. It is illegal in Alaska thankfully.
