I would really like to make my own soap and have done a lot of googling on how to do it. Can I buy lye online? O I have to use that? Can you please give me your favorite recipes and or blogs/tutorials on soap making. Thank you.

To make soap you have to use lye. Even melt and pour soaps had lye used at some point to make them. I buy my lye at Essential Depot. http://www.essentialdepot.com/servlet/StoreFront

Many soap makers will not just give out a fave recipe because they can be a lot of work to create one that is really good, Thats done by trial and error. So you may find some good recipes online. ALWAYS run the recipe through a lye calc before making it. This site has some good recipes to start with and a lot of info on making your own recipes. http://www.millersoap.com/

I tried it once and made the soap too soft (too much shea butter I think but not sure) but it was still usable. I ended up deciding to keep buying my favorite brands but lately have been thinking of giving it a try again.

Youtube is fine, online recipes *can* be fine but please please please run every single recipe you decide to try through a soap calculator (I have seen some real doozies on the web that would probably leave you without the need for soap due to the lack of skin you might have left after washing with their soap :O).
