2 questions about starting solids
I'm wondering if anyone can give me some advice on starting my DD on solids. I have 2 questions...
1) How do I know its time? She is 4 months and I am not 100% sure how to tell if she is ready. She has never eaten a lot of food at once, usually no more than 3 1/2 oz at a time. Lately she seems like she wants to eat more often and has shown interest in our food. Whenever we eat she stops what she's doing and stares at our plates, as if mesmerized by them. It's funny. However, she's only 4 months so I feel thats on the early end of starting solids. Or am I wrong about that? 2) What should I start her on? This question kind of has two parts to it. a) How do I go about introducing foods? Is there a method I should follow? b) I want to make all my own baby food. I have a blendtec and it can blend just about anything. So I am wondering if there is a major difference between giving her raw food vs. cooked food. Is there a reason to only give one or the other or could I do both? Would raw food be harder to digest or do I have to worry about organisms that wouldn't be killed during cooking? Thanks in advance for the advice. |

Re: 2 questions about starting solids
I tried some rice or baby cereal. 6 they say for actual food. They say veggies first then fruits 8 month or later 4 meats I think. I used black & decker I think chopper but it like pruee stuff not meat. I used some apple juice or juice 4 fruits to help smooth out more at first then later on let it be thicker. I started out with fruits. Mine liked peas & carots together not separate.

Making a little & try b4 u make lots of food to see if baby is ready. Cooking softens food. I cooked them b4 blending.

Re: 2 questions about starting solids
We are facing this same question. Our doctor just said go ahead and try whenever you want after 4 months and see how it goes. Our little one seems to be losing interest in the bottles so we really want to try solids. We tried rice cereal tonight and it went okay. Not sure how much actually got eaten, but we will try again tomorrow. I would say just go for it if you feel ready! Alot of things I have read say give it a try, and if it doesn't work try again in a week and your baby might be ready by then.

I have always like this article:
http://kckidsdoc.com/6-myths-starting-solid-foods.html I would recommend waiting until closer to 6months. Babies are always interested in putting things in their mouth, so watching you do it or even grabbing food and putting it in their mouth aren't exactly reliable signs. Cereals are under debate as to whether they are are good idea or a very bad one (more on that in the link). There isn't a certain order to feed things in. It will make no difference if you start with fruits or veggies or grains when it comes to how your child chooses food when given the option to choose. 3.5oz at a feeding is more than my daughter ate at even 9months. Solids should not replace liquid meals under the age of 1. They should simply be an introduction and teaching how to eat: chew, etc. HTH

Re: 2 questions about starting solids
Any time after 4 months is fine. Introduce no more than one new food in a four day period to watch for any reactions. You're on the right track and paying attention to your babies clues. They should always stay as close to the four hour time span as possible for breast or bottle as long as theyre not starving. Sometimes when they want to eat more often that's your clue to try a little bit of food. Rice cereal is usually first. Maybe some banana, avocado, etc. avoid your sweet fruits, acidic fruits, berries. I love making all my own baby food. Huge cost saver too. By the time my daughter was a year old she could have eaten the equivalent each day of 6 organic pouches which are about $1.40 each pouch.

I know some kids do quite easily. But I certainly wouldn't change the routine just to add solids. You supplement the routine. If you're at 4 hrs, stay there. If you're at 2 / 3 / etc, stay there.

Re: 2 questions about starting solids
We just started solids on a daily basis at 6 months. Diaper poop is grrrooosss! I miss only bf'ing as I didn't have to rinse dipes by hand before putting them in the washer. DH hasn't attached diaper sprayer to the toilet yet so I was outside hosing off one of DS's dipes today. Yuck

Re: 2 questions about starting solids
I start solids when they have the pincher grasp down. I let my 6m old dd taste our foods, but I haven't actually sat her in a chair and fed her a baby meal. She's on the boob constantly, and I think that's best for her.
As, for what to start with, it's a personal choice. Something healthy! Then, wait to introduce new foods to make sure they don't have a reaction! Good Luck!
