Re: using PS for band or sports?
Are you talking about dual enrolling? I'm think you get to take up to half or a third of the classes (like 2 or 3 if there are 6 subjects taught) and you can participate in extra curricular activities. In my district, you can't be part of the HSAP if you're dual enrolled though.

Re: using PS for band or sports?
You know, I had heard that the schools (around here anyway) had to allow HS kids into extracurriculars, but the person I spoke with from the DOE said something about the individual schools deciding some stuff. I really need to call the school right here but I haven't yet.

Re: using PS for band or sports?
as far as i know, you dont have to enroll in the school to do the after school activities. from what i heard you talk to the school and let them know you hs and that your child wants to take band or baseball or whatever they offer after school.

I think it varies by states and districts. I live in Michigan, here is the law here:
Nonpublic and home school students may enroll in nonessential elective classes at the resident public school (Snyder v Charlotte Public Schools, 421 Mich 517, 365 NW2d 151 (1984)). Students in home school families operating under exemption (f) may also enroll in nonessential elective classes at the resident public school. (See Attachment G.) In July 1997, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled in Agostini v Felton that public schools may provide shared time courses to nonpublic school students on nonpublic school premises using public school employees. Nonessential elective classes may include, but are not limited to: band, drama, art, physical education, music, computer, and advanced placement courses.

Re: using PS for band or sports?
In Maryland you are not permitted to use any service or benefit of the public school system when you choose to homeschool.

Re: using PS for band or sports?
My DD would really love to continue in middle school band. I need to check into it with our school disctrict/particular school. She has been enrolled there previously, and according to her friends, they are calling her name for roll. Whoops, I must have forgotten to send that withrawal form...
I will call on Monday and ask about that as well as the band or sports participation... Is there a place to look up these laws?

Re: using PS for band or sports?
HSLDA.org is the best place for law info. Do some states not allow dual enrollment?

Re: using PS for band or sports?
We are in CO and they allow it. My kids are going to be taking before-school band. We are allowed any of the public school special services as well (testings, therapies) but you have to push for it. Homeschoolers still pay taxes on public schools here.
