Re: I don't think anything is wrong, but...
This is a little scary to me--not that I doubt your child's need for that much sleep, but because what it means here if my DD also needs that much at that age. If we send DD to public school for kindergarten and she needs 12 hours of sleep per night because she's given up napping, I'll have to put her to bed at 5 pm! Elementary schools start at 7:10 am here, and the bus comes just after 6 am. If I took her to school, I'd still have to leave by 6:30 to avoid an insane car line. Praying she's still willing to nap at least a little bit so I can push back bedtime after 7 pm! Or praying that we can afford private school!

Lol. Totally normal. My 3 yr old naps for anywhere from 1.5-3 hrs a day, normally it is right around 2 hrs. She sleeps 9-10 hrs at night.

Re: I don't think anything is wrong, but...
That would still mean putting DD to bed between 7-7:30. Considering DH doesn't get home some nights until 6:30...basically it would be family meal, then go straight to bed. I get the feeling I'll get some resistance there... Elementary school starts way too early in the morning here...

My oldest started napping intermittently (every 2-3 days) at age 2 and stopped napping altogether by age 3. However, she often slept for 12ish hours at night. At age 6 she sleeps about 11 hours at night and doesn't nap.
My younger daughter was napping about an hour a day and sleeping 11 hours at night up until she started kindergarten this month. Now there are no naps because it is full day. She just turned 5. My 3yo & 2yo both nap for 2ish hours everyday and sleep for 11-12 hours at night. I'm surprised that lady thought your children's sleep habits were unusual!

You have dream kids. Let them sleep. I wish DD1 (3yo) would nap. She hasn't since about 18mos, but if she does by accident she's up until 1am despite my best efforts.
I remember she was 12 or 13 months and had JUST nursed to sleep for her 11am nap. Then her eyes flew open and she said "no!". That was the beginning of the end for us... |
