Homemade BBQ sauce

I recently made some homemade BBQ sauce that I followed a recipe for. It came out way too sweet and quite thick. I added quite a bit of extra vinegar to it already. Anyone have any idea how I can both thin it out and make it less sweet?

It is hard to tell without seeing the recipe. Sometimes there are other hidden ingredients that would make that easier.

There are so many variations on BBQ sauce, it's tough to say. As a PP said, without seeing the recipe, it's hard to say how to fix it. Tomato sauce and paste have sweetness too. What style BBQ are you looking for? Texas style is very thin and vinegary. Then there's Memphis style, Kansas City style, etc
