So upset- Croup and Asthma
My 4 1/2 yo has asthma and was diagnosed with croup Thursday. She's now getting worse. I told the doctor we saw that she needed prednisone. We went at the first sign of illness. We are on day 3 now and she is getting worse.
I called the on call doc and we have to do albuterol treatments every two hours 3 times and then back off to 4 hours. If she gets short of breath within an hour of treatment, we then have to go in. I KNEW she needed prednisone to get us through this. I KNEW she had to be wheezing even though the other doc couldn't hear it. She is just like me. I've already been through this with both of us. The doctor I spoke with today is the best in the practice. He often calls just to check on my daughter if we have seen him for illness. Please pray for us. We just did a treatment and she's already starting to cough. |

mama. I hope she responds soon. We've had one bad episode that required prednisone and albuterol together so I feel for both of you!

Ds2 had a cold & on top of that he had an allergic reaction to food (hadn't known at the time) when I took him in they gave him 3 breathing treatments over two hrs & pred! I would take your daughter to the ER because you KNOW she's going to need it! Your ped should not be making her wait that long- esp if she's just had a treatment & already having difficulty. :/

We ended up going to get a pulse oximeter to have around. Her O2 is 98% so we're good for the moment.

Re: So upset- Croup and Asthma
It sounds like the dr ignored you? Some people have asthma & never wheeze (like me and all my kids), waiting on wheezing for meds isn't a good idea for some.
I just keep extra meds in the house so we're ready when something comes up. We have a crazy stash for the winter but we are prepared since I know this time of year gets bad. But I know there are plenty times when we're not stocked up & someone gets sick. Isn't that usually the way? I hope your daughter is better soon & with out needing the ER or hospital.

My son had asthma when he was younger (he thankfully grew out of it) and had croup quite a few times during that time. It was really scary, and he often needed prednisone before wheezing started also. It took a lot of convincing if we needed to see a dr other than who we normally see.
