Breastfeeding cookies?

DH made me a batch of these cookies (basically chocolate chip with brewer's yeast, oatmeal, and flax seed added)....but the recipe didn't say anywhere how many you're supposed to eat, or for how long?

Do I only eat them to boost supply, or to maintain as well? I would imagine eating more would increase supply more, but at the same time I'm not sure eating 3 or 4 cookies a day is a great idea!

Re: Breastfeeding cookies?

i found this site which talks about needing to eat only 1 or 2, but I guess it depends on which recipe you used.

Pretty interesting idea, can't wait to try it. Thanks for bringing it up!

Re: Breastfeeding cookies?

Thanks!

I used the recipe from Food.com and it's just like Toll House....the cookies are actually seriously addicting if you don't overbake them.

I have no idea if they're making a difference yet, but I figure they can't hurt (except maybe my waistline, lol)

If you're concerned about nutrition, you can substitute out some ingredients.

Substitute coconut oil for some or all of the butter (and be sure to use real butter.
Use 1/2 the sugar
substitute 1/4 cup applesauce OR 2tbsp water + 1 tbsp flax seed for 1 egg
Use white whole wheat flour for all or 1/2 the flour OR Ground dried oats to make oat flour and substitute for flour
Use semisweet or bittersweet chocolate chips in only 1/2 the quantity called for
Add chopped nuts of your choice 3/4 cup +/- to your preference

Re: Breastfeeding cookies?

I have a mainly oatmeal based recipe that i use. To keep from eating too many, I make the dough, drop by rounded spoonfuls on a cookie sheet lined with waxed paper, then freeze it. Then I transfer the balls of dough to a freezer bag. When I need a little boost in supply, I take a few out, let them thaw, and bake them. I LOVE them so much. DH and DS love them too. I don't worry too much when I eat several in a day, even for a few days in a row, because I eat incredibly healthy, plus BF burns extra calories. Oh, and I don't use chocolate chips, I use raisins

Lol. I wouldn't worry about eating too many, especially in the beginning! The baby weight will come off and the extra calories are probably just as helpful in boosting milk supply as the oatmeal, etc. Just EAT.

I used to eat two or three (I make them pretty small tho) per day as dessert and could tell a difference. I remember once eating a few more and felt so engorged the next day! They are so addicting.
