Best age for 18 inch doll

I'm thinking of getting my DD an American girl doll (or one similar) for Christmas this year. But I'm debating if she's just a little too young for it. She just turned 4. Thoughts? What age were your kiddos when they played with one the most?

I was 8 when I got my first, my sister was a very mature 6 for hers. I wouldn't go any younger than that for that sort of doll if you want it to be played with and well taken care of.

For us at least, getting an AG doll for Christmas was a BIG deal, my grandma got them for us and talked to us about how special the doll was and how to take care of it. I understand that in other families a doll is a doll, but for us, they were really memorable events in our childhood.

I'm thinking about getting my almost 2 year old a bitty baby for Christmas to hold *me* over until she is old enough for an AG doll

My ydd was 5 when she got hers and the hair not being taken care of has been the biggest issue. I just put it up in a bun and tell her to leave it alone and it's fine now. Otherwise, dd treats her AG great.
