Newbie with sewing question about fleece

I found the infamous Katrina shorties and longies soaker patterns for fleece covers and after watching some videos on youtube, I am going to borrow a sewing machine and attempt to tackle making a few.

I am currently expecting #2 (boy) in 5-7 weeks and wanted to know if I should bother with the newborn size for the soakers or just jump to the smalls? He is already measuring big and I will likely deliver early.

What is the approximate weight ranges for each size? We have NB and Small size prefolds and snappies to use until the baby can fit into the B.G. pockets I used with my daughter (at about 3-4 months).

I was thinking of making 2 shorties and 2 longies. How much fabric do I need total?

ETA: Here are the links to the patterns in case you aren't familiar. I found them on pinterest, but I see they were passed around a lot on this site a few years ago
