I'm waiting for DD1. She will be 9 right after Christmas. As far as I know she believes, but I know she is close. I'm kind of looking forward to when she doesn't b/c I need a Santa's helper! Dh is so not into the shopping, wrapping, etc., lol. So, when she doesn't believe I'm going to take her out for dinner when we go shopping and let her stay up late shopping for the 3 younger ones with me. We will have a night or 2 and lock ourselves in my room with freshly popped popcorn, soda, treats, and the loot to wrap as we watch a Christmas movie.

I never told my parents that I knew Santa wasn't real. I love the magic and wonder of it all and didn't want that part to end, so you may not get that santa's helper?

Santa! I have been excited to be Santa since pretty much since I found out he wasn't real. I never at any moment felt my parents "lied" to me about santa/easter bunny/etc..

Ha ha! Well she will for sure still be apart of the magic and wonder. Maybe if she hasn't told me by age 12 I'll talk to her. I need her!!!!!

Re: santa or not to santa?

We don't do Santa because I don't want to lie to my kids. I don't judge families that do Santa though either.

Instead we tell our kids that Santa is pretend, but it's a fun game that people like to play. We explain that people like to get each other surprises and pretend that it's Santa doing it. I feel that this way they won't spoil it for other kids. We also "play the game." Each family member has a Santa Sock (these long red and white striped socks) instead of a stocking and a few days before Christmas we split into teams to shop for the other family member's sock stuff. Also, our rule is that whatever you get someone must fit in their Santa Sock. It's fun for the kids and I don't think that they'll feel like they're missing out on anything.

We don't do Santa. I believe there is enough real magic in the world, I want my kids and myself to experience that instead. Americanized version of Santa seems to be a lot more about commercialism than magic anyhow. imo

Re: santa or not to santa?

Ok, I am the weird one here. I did santa for the older two; I will not for my youngest. I finally told my kids the truth. Santa is not real, people are real. I am the one who puts those presents under the tree. I'm tired of having to wrap "santa" presents in different paper. I'm tired of always HAVING to unwrap presents on Christmas morning. I want to be able to just give the girls a few gifts instead of a few from me and a few from "Santa". I'm tired of all the questions. "Why do we do Operation Christmas? Can't Santa get overseas?" "Who makes the toys?", "How can Santa get in the house without chimneys?" I am tired of lying to them. I'm sick of having stay up super tired after getting home from church so that "santa" can come. I am also tired of the tooth fairy. Thankfully we never did the Easter Bunny. So yeah, it's not happening for Alannah. We can have all the magic of the holidays without the fake stuff. Sorry if I sound disenchanted but frankly I am. And I'm pretty broke right now, so that doesn't help, LOL

Re: santa or not to santa?

Some people in our famiyl are very upset with us for not doing Santa. They take it really personally and act like we're hurting our children. They made me feel really guilty and so one year I started a "secret santa" game for me kids to participate in. I told my kids that santa is a game and everyone plays the game differently. Some years we don't play that game at all, and some years we do secret santa. But they know that the gifts are coming from people, and you find out who in the end.

We don't do the easter bunny either but ironically we did do the toothfairy for ds when he lost his first tooth. I was going to put on dd's fairy wings and grab her wand and dance into ds's room right before he feel asleep. When he looked at me and said "mom?" I was going to say "shhhhh... go to sleep, you'll see your mom in the morning" and dance out. Since he fell asleep faster than expected I jsut stuck the dollar under his pillow LOL. But I do want him to know it's a game, and the money is coming from dh and I

We do Santa here. It is so fun and magical. I just adore the fall and christmas season. It is just so special to share little traditions with our loved ones and for us Santa just adds to it.
My BFF doesn't do Santa and her dh hates Christmas (I think he has some family issues that have something to do with it.) I have no issue with their stance EXCEPT I had a big party on Christmas eve last yr. and was really worried that her ods (5) might burst a few bubbles. He is a very curious guy and likes to talk it out when people do things differently. normally I think his verbal curiosity is endearing but I didn't want to have any sad kiddos on Christmas eve.
