Re: S/O: Santa believers, what do you do to make the magic 'real'?

We have the elf on a shelf, my DS loved it last year, but DD2 wanted to play w/ it. So since she's still all about babies DS and I have decided we're going to make her her own elf to play with before Mr. Sookie the Elf (DS named him) comes back to see us. We visit santa at the mall, mommy makes the cookies. My aunt gave me a special cookie plate for santa years ago, well before I had kids... but I can't find it. So once I do, we'll be able to use that. The nursery we get our tree at passes out reindeer food, and my landlord goes out in the morning and sweeps it away so DS doesn't see it while we're distracted w/ Christmas gift opening. In our house, Christmas is all about Santa. Mommy and Daddy buy you what you need during the year. Santa brings you what you want at Christmas time. Mommy's and Daddy's in our house do not buy Christmas presents. I tell the kids that they can either have gifts from Santa, or gifts from mom and dad. I'm hoping that saying that now will help if any non-santa kids slip around them when they're older.

I love reading these!!

Jennifer, I may have to steal the key idea! I love it! I should look for a fun old skeleton key at the local thrift shops.

Well, thankfully that stuff REALLY blends into the grass/ground.

Now it is kind of funny b/c we live in a wooded area so we have TONS of deer. Our first winter here the kids looked out and saw "rein"deer tracks all over the front yard. They were so excited! The next year we had no snow, but they found a lot of "rein"deer poop all over the ground. DD1 said it looks similar to "just deer poop." I agreed.

Sometimes they have us leave out carrots for the reindeer. Sometimes they forget, but remember in the morning. OF course. But, we say enough people probably left something for them or Santa shared his cookies. We always leave out cookies and milk.

On Christmas Eve we go to mid day mass, then come home for appetizers and dinner. After dinner the kids get changed in their Christmas pj's, we make hot cocoa and drive around in the car checking out all the holiday lights. Then, back home to a crackling fire, they open gift(s) from out of town relatives that we won't be with on Christmas day, then we all sit on the couch and read "Twas the Night Before Xmas." Then it is bedtime.
Holiday lights!!! I did forget about that. We do that several times a week starting Thanksgiving weekend! So fun!!! Do you all have some killer displays??

My DH got in the habit of making these phone calls for people he worked with. He has a good Santa voice, and the kids love it. Now, he generally gets about 6-10 requests from work a year to call kids pre-Christmas.

Growing up my parents would make boot prints with the soot from the fire place (flour) but we have a gas fireplace that won't produce any ash, so it wouldn't be realistic lol
We did the videos, too, and my kids were too cute watching them. The anticipation and excitement when the elves declared them "nice" as a riot. Santa sent them each a birthday video this year, too (which I guess I must have put in their birthdates when we did the Christmas videos, because the birthday messages came automatically.

We have a special key that hangs on the outside of our front door for Santa to use to get in the house since we don't have a fireplace. He usually leaves it by the cookie plate when he is done.
We have a key, too.

We do milk, cookies, (although sometimes Santa has requested a beer.... ), carrots, reindeer food on the lawn, have done the flour footprints. DD writes a letter to Santa every year on Christmas Eve and leaves it for him with a picture. She has done this since before she could write. I am sure we do more....

I have a Santa question, but will start yet another Santa thread...

Gotta love the big jolly guy.

I'm really debating whether to do the elf of the shelf.

We always put out cookies and milk, and Santa takes bites of the cookies. One year, DD made Reindeer Food (puppy chow) at school for his reindeer.

This year, we are going to leave him a piece of the birthday cake for Jesus so he can celebrate the birth with us.
