Growing out of GERD

DS2 is 20 months old (today!). He was diagnosed with reflux at 2 months old. I did a full elimination diet and it didn't help. We did Zantac for a while, but it wasn't totally controlled. We tried Prevacid which was horrendous for him. He screamed in pain for days while he was on it. Prilosec has been pretty good. 2 months ago, we tried taking him off it again and he was a mess. Cried all night, didn't want to eat, etc.

Anyway, now that he's 20 months old and still needing medication, is he ever going to grow out of this? I was told by a couple of pedis to expect him to outgrow it by 6-12 months which clearly hasn't happened. Anybody have a kid go this long needing meds and eventually outgrow it?

mama. DS2 will be 3 years old tomorrow, and he still has reflux. As he's gotten older, we've been able to wean him off his meds. I think he stopped taking them shortly after he turned 2. He still has occasional reflux episodes, but nothing major.

Re: Growing out of GERD

Two of my kids had reflux, neither on meds because it wasn't diagnosed until way too late to do anything about it. They are 13 and 5 now with some food allergies and sensitivities but otherwise they are fine.

Re: Growing out of GERD

DS1 had reflux. The Drs said it would get better when he started being more upright - though when he started sitting up the vomiting actually worsened because of the pressure on his stomach. When he was standing and walking it got a ton better.
He is not still on meds - we only ever gave him zantac, and weaned him off it when things seemed to settle with him standing. But he does still have issues with it from time to time. When he is stressed out he'll complain about heartburn, and he can't eat many sweets at all without having some reflux - I've heard from a lot of adult sufferers that sweets are a common trigger.

I think most kids do outgrow it, to some extent, but when is different for all of them.

Re: Growing out of GERD

3 kids with reflux as infants...YDS outgrew by about 6 months, DD outgrew by 8.5 months (right around when she started walking).

ODS is 6 years old and STILL has reflux. He was on Zantac for the first year, his ped refused to renew the prescription after the one year mark and whenever we mentioned his reflux symptoms after that, I was told it was everything from toddler diarrhea to food intolerances to (in relation to nighttime whining/crying/curling up in a ball complaining of stomach issues) night terrors and constipation (cause...ya know...he's constipated AND has toddler diarrhea??!!) We made some major diet changes and medicated with children's Tums and saw a bit of relief for a while, but by age four I pretty much threw a fit at the ped's office, sat in the main waiting area, and told him I was not leaving until he either gave me a referral to a pediatric GI or had me escorted off the premises by police...I got the referral Ped GI was the best step we ever managed to make, and when we finally got in to see him, he said it was VERY obvious that ODS had had reflux for a while and he had significant esophogus & tooth damage from it...he ended up on really strong rotating dose of Prevacid and Prilosec for a year to help heal damage, then his GI took him off of them for a year (which we're coming to the end of here in the next month) because long-term use can cause bone loss...this year definitely hasn't been as bad as previous ones, I'm assuming mostly because the damage has been at least partially healed?? His teeth are still in horrible shape and probably always will be. Now we just have to really really watch what he eats, and he has an "emergency" bottle of Prevacid that he can take if his reflux really starts bothering him, but we've only had to use it a couple times.

Re: Growing out of GERD

I have a 6 year old DD. She had GERDs as an infant. Constant spitting up and no meds helped. They tried everything. And was in lebonur hospital twice. When she was 8 months old she stopped. However, we just found out today that it is back. Full force. She is full projectile vomiting at night when she lays down, she has developed a cough, she is horse. They are trying Zantac right now. I pray it works. And my thoughts are with you and your little one that he gets better soon and is done with it.

I know you tried an elimination diet, but not sure what you tried exactly. Found this on gerd and a detox diet. Some of these things may be helpful, most likely the diet plan aspect. Good luck, I hope he gets some relief!

Hugs. My son had it and we finally got him off medicine at 3 1/2. We tried many times before that but he needed the meds until then.

Re: Growing out of GERD

DS is 3.5 and on 15 mg of Prilosec. He is tube fed on Peptamin Jr, and was on Elecare for 3 years, which is one of the most hypoallergenic formulas on the market. Diet obviously isn't a factor for him.

Don't see any end in sight. His esophagus is permanently open. 90% of kids close by 10 months. 95% of kids close by a year. He is part of the 5% that never fully closed. Since he isn't having any other major issues because of it, they aren't doing anything about it. He takes reflux meds, and doesn't drink more than 5 oz at a time, or eat a huge amount of food at once.

My neighbor's boy is 7 and still on his meds too. His dad is a doctor, and they've tried a bunch of things to get him off, with no luck. He just needs them.
