I think it depends.

My nephew is in kindy and already cares about what he wears.

I'd just support him in working out and encourage him to wear clothing that he likes and is comfortable in as long as its appropriate.

He's at the age where they usually start to care.

Ds1 is 8 and is picky about his shirts so I let him pick out some on ebay. He also care about what hoody he wears, its not a brand thing yet, but he definitely has his own style and comfort level.

My 4th grade students (males) care very much about what they wear, and have for a couple years. I teach in a multigrade classroom (K-8), so they learn it from the older kids. By the time they were in 2nd grade, they had to have DC shoes, Etnies, Vans, and other brands that I don't remember. However, my current 2nd graders could not care less about brand. It varies so much.
