Just got a job offer and I start Monday!

I just received a job offer today and I start in less than 1 week!

My sister is coming out for 3.5 weeks to help us through this transition time, but I need to start looking for childcare. I am thinking that a nanny will be our best bet as I need someone who can transport my older son to and from preschool 5 days/week. We are fairly new to the area, so I know almost no one. How do you go about finding a nanny? Any tips, suggestions, things to ask/look for? What kind of rates do you pay your nanny? I am in Springfield, VA just outside of D.C. if that makes a difference and I have about 1 month to find suitable childcare.

Congrats on the new job!

If you know any other moms in the area or if there is a moms listserv, definitely try to join that. Also, I know some people who have used SitterCity (paid online service) to find their nanny and have had good luck. I have also advertised at the local community colleges and foudn some great people that way too.

Congratulations! It's hard finding work!

Are you in any playgroups? They could probably point you to good day cares in the area, or know good in home. I found my playgroup on FB. Not only do I get good advice, I also get to meet a lot of moms!

First of all, congratulations! So exciting!

I'd probably go with word of mouth first. Ask other moms in your neighborhood or play group first. I've used SitterCity.com, too. It's ok. But, I eventually found our current daycare through a website through my state (Maryland) for licenses daycare providers. Dunno if VA has something like that...

Congrats! I know those websites, like sittercity have a way you can post on there, but you have to be very careful, and you can also try to look them up on the internet, or social media to get a little more insight into the potential nanny. Too bad your family can't help you, my SIL is staying with and helping me with my DSs

Congrats on your new job.
In terms of daycare, I am part of a local facebook group for mommies, and they have been invaluable resources. You can check if there is a mommy group online (facebook is great, I know there are some on yahoo groups as well) who might have suggestions/recommendations. Or any other local mommy groups on the various mommy boards who are familiar with your area. Good luck, and congrats again.
