My helpful, kindhearted 5 yr old

So I took her grocery shopping with me a couple days ago.

We're in the cereal/coffee aisle. I'm looking for some tea. It's like 7:30pm. The aisle is empty. Then a lady comes behind us, looking at the cereal on the other side. She has a little boy in her cart.

She says to the little boy, "oh, mommy's arm hurts. Ow, ow, ow..." as she's rubbing her arm above her elbow. She was mostly talking to herself.

DD notices this and whispers to me, "mama, can I talk to that lady?" (I told her to ask before she randomly talks to strangers b/c sometimes it was a little scary how friendly she was) I said, "Sure."

She walks over to the lady and here's how this goes:

DD: Are you okay?
Lady looks at me with a "what?" look on her face.
I say, "She heard you saying your arm hurts..."
DD: Yea, I heard you say your arm hurts. Are you okay?
Lady: *chuckles* oh yes, dear I'm okay. I hurt my arm the other day, but it's okay.
DD: How did you hurt it? Did you fall down?
Lady: *chuckles* No, I picked up something heavy and I pulled a muscle.
DD: My Daddy did that once when he picked up our kitchen!
Lady: o_0
DD: Not our REAL kitchen, my play kitchen, it was in a big box.
Lady: *picking up a box of cereal* Oh, ok. That makes more sense.
DD: *grabs cereal box from lady* I'll help you with that so it doesn't hurt your arm! *puts cereal in lady's cart* Yea, I wouldn't want you to hurt your arm putting that in your cart.
Lady: Thank you SO much! You are such a bright little girl!
DD: *big smile* Thank you!
Me: ok, let's go now sweetie. Tell the nice lady bye.
DD: Bye! It was nice to meet you! Be careful so you don't hurt your arm again!

And I wore a huge million dollar smile the rest of the shopping trip. I was SO proud of my DD! If I'd had buttons on my shirt, they would have popped off!

I've made my share of parenting mistakes, that's for sure. But I must have done a few things right, at least.

That is SO sweet. What a smart and thoughtful little girl!

It's my week to have my nephew and we stopped by Whole Foods on Sunday and he picked out a two pack of peanut butter cups since I said he could have a treat.

He ate one and handed me the second one and said "Here, you can have it, Auntie. I don't want to eat it because if I do that means I can't share it with you. I want to share it with you because I love you."
