dandruff remedy for my 10 yr old?

While braiding my daughters hair last night I noticed she has some pretty nasty dandruff. She does not have any other skin issues, so I'm assuming the cause is not washing her hair enough and using junky shampoo. It is a battle to get her to wash her hair. How can I treat this without having to use a harsh dandruff shampoo. Her hair is thick and curly if that makes any difference.
