Help Kindergarten Place values
Oldest DD has been doing kindergarten and some first grade work for math. I found several curriculum sets that teach place value for kindergarten this is the only thing she does not yet know for kindergarten I have no idea how to explain it to her. Does anyone have a great site that can tell me how to explain it to her. I found some printable work sheets but I am just at a loss how to explain it.

Re: Help Kindergarten Place values
Math U See suggests teaching them place value using "decimal street." The idea is that the units (ones) house can only hold 9 visitors. If someone else wants to come, they need to make a decision to all go next door to the tens house and become one ten. You get the idea, I think.

Re: Help Kindergarten Place values
I was just going to mention the same thing Kristi did. You can have 9 units in the units house before they have to move up to the tens house. You can have 9 tens before they have to move into the hundreds house. The illustration probably works better if you have blocks to visually show it.

I really love using base 10 blocks. We use them from kindergartens on up and they really give kids a clear visual picture

Re: Help Kindergarten Place values
base ten blocks or unifix cubes work really well! The unifix cubes are probably a lot cheaper and they're more multipurpose.

Re: Help Kindergarten Place values
If you go to the Math-U-See website and watch the sample video for Primer or Alpha you can see how he explaines decimal street. My kids didn't get it with other curriculums, but when we started MUS it was a great visual and they are doing well now.
