Losing my milk
My dd is just over 9 months old and all of a sudden my milk supply is dwindling. I'm not pregnant (tested yesterday) and there's been no other changes. I still pump 2-3 times at work and nurse frequently at home. Most of our nursing relationship, I've had an over supply. My poor dd is getting so frustrated and is pulling so hard on my nipples trying to get more milk to come. I'm taking 6-9 fenugreek capsules/day and drinking tons of water and mothers milk tea. Can my milk really just be drying up? Anything else I can do? My po

Re: Losing my milk
Hmmmm I don't know why your supply would be drying. I take the fenugreek and Motherlove More Milk Plus Vegetarian Capsules (Alcohol Free). sorry I don't have huge advice other then really push the water ((hugs)) maybe oatmeal? I hear that is good for breastmilk. Maybe someone else will have other advice for you.

Re: Losing my milk
I don't know what to tell you except that I understand. With all my kids (5, 2 sets of twins so nursing together), my milk starts to dwindle slowly around 7-9 months. By the time they are a year, I have almost nothing. Nothing I do helps. It's awful and I HATE it. Now that I know, I stock pile milk for when it happens so I don't have to give formula. I don't work, but with my first, I was exclusively pumping from 6-10 months when I gave up because my supply was so low. Sounds like you are doing what you can.Is there anyway you can add any more pumping sessions or add some in during the evening? I pump like crazy and I feel like it really does help my supply (for a while). Try some power pumping sessions maybe. That is when you pump for 10 minutes on and then 10 minutes off over an hour. The first time I pump till the milk is gone then every 10 minutes on and off for an hour after that. One other thought I just had....could your cycle be coming back? Some women have their supply dip just before AF comes each month. I get mine back early (at 6wks with my first single baby and I'm only 3wks out from my second single). That doesn't happen to me, but I often wonder if getting my cycle early is related. Sorry I don't have any other suggestions....Oh wait....there is one other supplement you can try. It's called More Milk Plus and I'll give you a link. It works very well for a lot of women. The liquid works better than the pills and the one in alcohol works better than the one without. Here is a link: http://www.motherlove.com/product/53...Milk-Plus.html Good luck!!

Thanks. I'll look into the other supplement. I have pumped twice at work today so far and have gotten 5 oz total so far. My dd drinks 10 oz at the sitters these days so I need 5 more oz in this last pumping session to break even. Ugh. My dd is beyond attached to nursing and I am feeling terrible for her. I haven't tried oatmeal yet so I'll start eating it for breakfast tomorrow. I am thankful to have made it to 9 months but would like to reach my ultimate goal of a year. I guess I though my dd and I would be in control of when I stopped, but maybe my body has the ultimate say. I haven't had AF yet since my dd was born so at first I thought that it was either coming or I was pregnant. It's been at or over a week now so I don't think it's AF. Who knows. I'll keep pumping and see what happens. If I have to give formula I know it's not the end of the world. It's just not what I want to give her.
Thanks again. |

Re: Losing my milk
Do NOT ask for Reglan!!! I took Reglan when I had supply problems with DD1 and it is horrible stuff with horrible side effects. There are even lawsuits against the manufacturer, now. If you consider taking a prescription, Domperidone is much safer!

Re: Losing my milk
Domperidone was not covered by my insurance. I have been on Reglan for months with no side effects and this is my 3rd time with no problems. While I agree that all meds have side effects, not everyone has them.

Re: Losing my milk
I am also WOHM and that's the time that my supply dips as well. I wound up having to supplement a little with DS1, but planned ahead with DS2 and pumped a ton. It sounds like you are trying it all. I would add a pump session in if you can. Oatmeal (not instant) and brewers yeast also really helped a lot. I'm not sure if I would use a prescription at nine months of age. I'm sure I would if it was a bitty. Hang in there.

Re: Losing my milk
I understand your frustration! I had the same thing happen around 9 months and started eating lactation cookies. I was almost surprised, but it did help!

OP, has anything changed? Your DD sleeping longer stretches at night? Eating more solids and nursing less during the day, etc?
