Chinese Language for pre-k/k level

I am of Chinese descent and am toying with the idea of teaching both my kids conversational chinese. I have long forgotten how to read/write detailed Chinese characters (kanji), though I still recall a few basic ones when I come across some. Any suggestions of good software/books to use (bearing in mind my main handicap -- not able to read the chinese characters)? I could still speak/pronounce the words properly, and I would be happy with both kids understanding/speaking simple chinese words. I found a website with dora in chinese and we have gone through some of that together.
thanks,
lin

My son spent time this past summer in China (for a month). He only knew English when he went, but came back knowing tons of Chinese. He is in 10th grade (homeschooled) and has chosen to use www.busuu.com to help him learn more. He likes it and it is free. I don't know if it is age appropriate for your kiddos. You just have to go take a look at it. Also many libraries carry Rosetta Stone for free.

Re: Chinese Language for pre-k/k level

http://www.childbook.com/Default.asp I went here and got Baby Learns Chinese for my son. I haven't been great about using it with him though. It is very simple though and I learned a few things. My father adopted my 2 sisters from China and so I wanted DS to be a part of that culture. My sisters (9 and almost 11) are in an immersion school (charter school). You might consider that when your child starts school. From what I understand, my sisters will not even be fluent when they graduate high school (after having 13 years of half and half instruction in english and mandarin).

Re: Chinese Language for pre-k/k level

thanks for the links! I am also considering some stuff from better chinese. One option for my kids (when they are older) is to spend some time with family in Asia for 1-2 months...I think that will go a long way towards flluency. No options for chinese charter schools around here only Spanish immersion in a town about 30 mins away. Maybe I need to move to a larger city!
