3yr old with non stop cough ~ HELP!

He's been in and out of the Dr's and had a trip to the ER in the last month. He is on pulmicort and albuterol for his asthma but this last week he wakes up almost every morning with a fever and this dry non stop cough. He went to the ER thursday and they put him on steroids and did x rays and said borderline pneumonia. He's having a hard time keeping down the steroids and usuall vomits right after he takes them. He is not utd on vax...has some but not totally caught up. What can I do to help him?! I am so worried and at my wits end with this sickness!

Are you using inhalers everyday, few times a day? Are they through nebi or inhalers? Nebi with just saline may help.

Yep we are using the nebulizer with pulmicort twice a day and albuterol every 4-6 hours in the nebi

I would take him back in for sure. My dr said we shouldn't be using inhalers that often. Maybe they can do something different med wise or do steroid shots. Hope you're able to get some help and answers.

Did they test for other sicknesses like strep? My son gets it easily with no symptoms and he coughs a LOT with it!

Definitely go back. It took 2 rounds of prednisone to get DS's asthma under control when it got really bad last year due to a cold.

Have you had a follow up with your pediatrician since the ER visit? My little guy had pneumonia as a toddler. He was in the hospital for 2 days, then we saw the doctor every other day, then weekly. You may have to be persistent with them, but don't be afraid to call the doctor's office to get help.

Make sure you use a mask for the nebi (not the blow by) and use the albuterol before the pulmicort. I'd ask about trying something for reflux too. There is a big correlation between the two and reflux meds are what finally kept my son out of the hospital.

When my son had pneumonia it always took if antibiotics and o2 to get him back in shape.

He's finally better! They uped his pulmicort and since the amoxi wasn't working they gave him zithromax and that worked within a day or two! His breathing is under control right now and I haven't needed the albuterol for several days now. Finallly! I was really starting to worry! They did test him in the hossy for strep and did x rays for pneumonia. At the Dr's follow up the also tested him for pertussis.
