chafing on chunky boy from prefolds?

So we use a combo of pockets and pf's. the pockets are find for summer, but when they have pants over them they always seem to leak/wick more so I tend to use pf's and covers more. My 17m old is a chunky boy and the pf's seem to be rubbing in paces causing chafing marks I have regular pf's and I either tri fold them so they are shorter or tri fold them the long way and fold the front down. If I just trifold them the shorter way they don;'t seem long enough, but with the trifold and folding it over it seems too bulky in the and is rubbing in areas. This is teh 4th baby we have cd'd but never had this issue....ideas?
