P.S. My cabbage patch doll was named Molly, and one day my mom wasn't giving me enough attention so I went and smacked Molly's head on a tree until it broke open, then I came inside crying and got love AND a bandaid to put on her head! Early munchausen syndrome by proxy?

On a personal note I KNOW I was spoiled. I had 3 cabbage patch dolls (that I still have) and I was an only child till I was 12. I am now only half an only child. I didn't purchase a car (because they were given to me) until I was a month shy of 24 (which I still have also). I think my generation as a whole isn't spoiled (I was born in 1976), however I do believe my sister's was (born in 1989). My other sisters' (born in 2001, 2003) generation I don't see as spoiled but I haven't dealt with many of them yet. My grandmother's generation I don't see as spoiled either.

Re: Spoiled kids of the 80s?
My Cabbage Patch kid was "Howie", my mother still has mine, plan on giving them to my girl when she's slightly older. I will give my girl baby dolls like CPKs over Barbies, any day at this point.
There will always be spoiled children/people and it's up to parents to break that cycle, but unfortunately once someone is spoiled it seems they do the same to their children (I have a cousin who is a PRIME example of this)

Re: Spoiled kids of the 80s?
Some are spoiled in every generation. Dh's grandpa is 73 and absolutely was spoiled rotten as a child.
I think "my generation" isnt so much spoiled as used to instant gratification. Things move so quickly and have our whole lives with tv, video games, Internet, cell phones, etc. we don't generally have to wait very long for things, so we expect is ASAP. Which can make us seem entitled and spoiled. Many of my friends feel like the deserve to have everything their parents have worked 30 or 40 years for, now. New car, new and large houses, best cell phone/cable/entertainment, vacations, meals out, etc. Dh and I have worked hard at changing our own thing from want, want want, to being content with our current blessings. Neither of us were given much as kids so it's easier for us then some of our friends. Eta: I had no cabbage patch doll. the girl down the block had one to play with and 3 nib on the shelf. Maybe that's why I'm a socialist?

lol. Linda and Stella here. And Clint for my baby brother.
I still have the babies, but no cable or a big house not worth debt to me.

I was born in 83. I got my 1st job at 16, and have been working since. While my first car was purchased for me, I was expected to pay insurance. My parents also got me a cellphone, but after the 1st month the bill was up to me. I purchased my 1st car around 19 when mine was passed down to my brother. My parents paid for my bachelors degree, but I also had a scholarship. I moved out at 20 and never moved back in. I paid for my own Masters degree with student loans. I am now a married homeowner with a stable job and a 3rd baby on the way.
I think spoiled is relative. Compared to my dad I had it easy. But I learned to be a responsible, polite member of society, so I guess it worked out ok.

For example, back in the day when TV was first invented maybe one house on the street would have it. Now, there is pretty much a television in everyone's home. When I grew up, there was no such thing as iPods, but now my kids regularly play with our ipad. I don't think it makes them spoiled, it just makes them a child of the technology generation.

Re: Spoiled kids of the 80s?
I wanted to add that with technology we are so much more connected with each other and know so much more about other peoples intimate lives. Keeping up with the Joneses used to mean just the joneses the next block over or at church. Now it means the Joneses in NYC and Beverly Hills and London and Tokyo and...
Which adds to our wants and what we buy. We literally have almost every product at our fingertips with Amazon. We aren't limited to the hardware store and sears catalog. |

I don't think of 80's kids as spoiled. But speaking of 80's dolls, here are mine. I recently got them out of the garage for DD to play with.
