but we didn't have any of those things in the 80's. No cell phones, no home computers... the first atari might have been out and the first nintendo in 1985... but I know we didn't afford one until way after then. shoot.. even microwaves weren't in every household in the 80's.

no, if we're talking about a generation that is used to instant gratification, we certainly aren't talking about the 80's.

Oh that's right! We didn't have a microwave either! I was stunned when I learned what one was! Heck I never touched a computer until 1998~

Me and my sister were born at opposite ends of the 80's (I was born in 1980 and she was born in 1989). She is a spoiled brat stil as an adult. I guess some would say I was spoiled because my mom tried to buy my love (we were not close at all). But I turned into a responsible adult and dont feel entitled to anything. I am not materialistic, I am very influenced by "if it aint broke dont fix it" motto when it comes to buying stuff, I am not in tons of debt, and my kids are very respectful and grateful.

The 90s kids are the worst I've encountered thus far, and I've met some pretty crap 80s kids.

Eh. I disagree with a lot of the statements on here. Not all young people are so awful or feel entitled. I am 22 and was VERY spoiled growing up (my parents are pretty well off) But even though I was brought up getting what I wanted, I got a job right after I turned 15 to make my own money and held that job for 7 years (until this year when we moved across the country). I didn't like the high school I was attending so I homeschooled myself and graduated on time with a great gpa. I married my high school sweetheart and started a family. I worked hard to get everything for myself once I was old enough to work and I don't feel entitled to anything. I know a lot of young people that do fall into the category I just want everyone to remember there are some pretty good apples in the bunch too!

We grew up poor, but it was college was a lot cheaper, and it was very easy for both of us in the late 80's early 90's to pick a craft that paid, go to college, and easily get a job right after graduation. I actually had my first nursing job lined up before I graduated, as did most of my classmates.

Now nursing school, as well as school to be a resp therapist, ultrasound tech, physical therapist, paramedic, etc are much harder to get into, and much fewer opportunities after graduation. I fear very much for my children, that they will not be able to get good employment..........

They will have had an easier childhood, but a much harder, more competitive young adulthood.

I find very little value in comparing children from different decades. Its like apples and oranges. And its kind of lame to try and label someone based on their birthday. Why not judge each person on their own merits? I was born in 81 and spoiled as a young child. Since this is some kind of indicator i had tons of cabbage patch dolls and even now i didnt realize that they were a big deal. Its not like they are $100 american girl dolls. Anyway my uncle worked in toy sales and so i got one every year for xmas and my bday.

I hate the word entitlement.

Me too! Especially when people mean SELF-entitlement. We should respect other people's entitlements. They are entitled to them.

And on another tangential note: Someone said my daughter looked like a cabbage patch doll. I had never seen one before and assumed it was a compliment. Then I googled them when I read this thread and now I am steaming with fury.

I would take that as a compliment. That's probably what the person meant lol

^^^i would say that to someone with an adorable kiddo! Take it as a compliment. Cabbage patch kids are very highly regarded in the us. Clearly.
