Re: Insurance doesn't cover prenatal or maternity care...what are my options?

Are you sure it won't cover delivery compications? I work with a bunch of insurance verirfiers at th hospital and I almost always hear themsay "this plan has no maternity coverage unless there are complications"

I do take that to mean that you would pay for a regular c-section...but if you were to have major issues they would cover them.

If that's the case, I would go for the birth center option.

That's a good question. I will check on that.

Just wanted to suggest you double check on this to be sure. I am currently 6 mos pg and DH is changing jobs in the next 2-3 months, which will require us to purchase private health insurance. We will most likely just pay for COBRA until after I have the baby (our current plan does have maternity coverage) and then move onto a different plan after delivery, but the companies I spoke to told me that the baby was not eligible for coverage until she had reached 30 days of age. So, if she were to be born Feb 1., they would not cover her until March 1. The 2 companies I spoke to were also very clear that NOTHING pregnancy-related would be covered, any hospital or surgery bills that arose due to complications were our responsibility.

This may vary from company to company, but you definitely want to be sure that you know the details of the coverage inside and out before you make a decision!

There is also a birthing center in Richmond. It was set up by my OB (she practices evidence based care) and I *think* there are 3 midwives that staff the birth center. It is right on a hospital campus, so in VERY close proximity should something arise. I risk out of using the center, but my OB is allowing me a TOL after 3 c/s, something that is VERY hard to come by in this area.

Can't help much since we pay out of the pocket when I got pregnant and delivered DS via C/S. BCBS is I think a good option if you're aiming to be under them. Hopefully you'll do a right decision.

I've had two children in the hospital with no complications/naturally. I don't think a home birth is for me, but would consider birthing centers.

Any suggestions for Independent insurance providers that do provide maternity coverage or other ways to save on prenatal/maternity costs? (I don't believe we would qualify for medicaid per income levels)

***Update-really leaning towards going with the birthing center no matter what coverage we go with. I think this options sounds great.
***Also leaning towards the private/individual insurance plan and setting up a health savings account.

Any thoughts on the updates?
