We did the big birthday party thing for DS's 1st and 2nd birthdays, and then after that we stopped. Until we moved here, we would go out to eat with my parents, but that's all we did. I wouldn't worry about what your relatives think...just do what you want to do. They will realize that you just don't do big parties, and it will be normal for them. Not everyone has to do the same thing. All of our relatives still do the big birthday party thing for all of their kids, we are the only one not to, and no one has said a thing to us about it.
