Re: Gagging while introducing solids...
I think it can take a little while for babies to get used to the whole process.

Re: Gagging while introducing solids...
My son did this too. I think it was a combo of not liking rice cereal and not being ready. At 6 months I started with squash and he hasn't stopped eating since! He will not eat rice cereal though but will eat the oatmeal.

Re: Gagging while introducing solids...
Yeah, my DD did this when I tried feeding her in the beginning. I can't blame them for gagging...they're getting something foreign shoved in their mouths, I'd gag too! And I'd then not trust that spoon anywhere near my face. We went to BLW after waiting a bit longer and while she was still a gagger, she happily gagged while continuing to eat lol.

It's a reflex that goes away around 5-6 months that the automatically push things out of their mouths. If she's doing that and gagging then she's not ready. Give it a little longer and try again. Nothing wrong with waiting. A lot of moms don't start solids until much later...even 12 mo. If she's BF and gaining there is really no need to start solids except maybe to "practice".

Re: Gagging while introducing solids...
Neither of my children were regularly eating solids until 10 months. She doesn't "need" them, so I don't know why your Ped would say that. If they bring it up again ask what the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends as far as nutrition for infants (esp EBF).

My daughter is 6 months today and does the same thing! She'll suck on pieces of fruit though no problem, must be the texture.

Re: Gagging while introducing solids...
I started introducing solids to DD when she is 6months. Gagging is normal though my DD didn't do this because when I introduce food using spoon,. I will put the spoon on top,. it was like her upper gums is pulling the foods out of the spoon so,. when it landed in her tongue the food will already be in the back of her tongue so it will not be push outward.

Is what she's eating lumpy or chunky at all? That could be why.

Re: Gagging while introducing solids...
I agree with PPs. 5 months is really young. Some gagging is normal.
