Is cloth diaper detergent necessary?
Or can I use whatever I use on the rest of the laundry? Why do you have to buy special diaper soap?? Thanks Ladies!!

Re: Is cloth diaper detergent necessary?
Nope not at all. That's just an old myth. Use whatever works. I use Tide Free powder.

I used to use Tide but I have been using Crunchy Clean so I don't have to do the final rinse. No issues with either just trying to save water. Use what works for you.

Re: Is cloth diaper detergent necessary?
Yep just a myth. I have never used special detergent. I get what is on sale at Costco. right now that is Arm and Hammer with Oxy. I have also used: All Free and Clear, Purex Free and Clear, Arm and Hammer Free.

Re: Is cloth diaper detergent necessary?
I started out believing that myth and ended up with diaper troubles like you wouldn't believe and almost gave up on cloth!! Then I switched to a mainstream detergent (Thanks to diaper swappers) and learned how to strip, and now have the cleanest diapers, and have for years!!

Re: Is cloth diaper detergent necessary?
It really depends on what diaper fabrics you're using as some are more prone to getting buildup than others. We use pul covers or suedecloth pockets with cotton, bamboo and hemp for soakers and wipes. We use Purex free and clear with zout and haven't had any problem in a full year except when I accidentally bought their plain ole triple action formula without the zout. I use the same detergent on dh's grubby work uniforms, diapers, and all other household laundry.
![]() FYI: Some detergents don't list that they have added softeners in them which can cause buildup/repelling problems. |
