readily available elderberry syrup for colds?

I went to Whole Foods and was able to get an Elderberry syrup for my son (4 years old). It works well for him and I honestly see an improvement within hours when he takes it. However I realized after I opened it, that it had corn syrup in it! So I am going to get elderberries, and echinacea from Frontier next time I place an order. That way I can make my own with honey and not corn syrup.

I swear by elderberry syrup for my family now. Stuff works wonders. I unfortunately have to order it online because we don't live in an area where "natural" anything is easily found. That's the one thing I miss about Seattle.

I have elderberry tea and take it with a little sweetener, find it helps with my asthma.

I just posted this on another post but it applies here too - My whole foods sells freeze dried elderberries (near the bulk spices & tea) and you can make your own syrup. It's really easy - you just boil down the berries, strain and add honey. Google a tutorial.
The berries are like $20-$23 a pound - BUT since they are freeze dried they weigh very very little. Just $3 worth easily made a months worth of syrup for my family. I have noticed a difference since I started using it. My son is in his first year of pre-k and has only had 1 minor illness compared to all the other newbies who have been sick every single week!

We get ours from our Naturopath, who is our family doc. I would see if you have a Holistic doc in your area and ask them if you can pick some up. That why you know its pure and not processed.

I have some elderberry-zinc lozenges from Sambucol (I used to have elderberry syrup but did not order more b/c I wanted neither the extra sugar nor the sugar substitutes); however, I generally just turn to my bottle of elderberry capsules. I don't get to taste the great Elderberry flavor, but in a capsule I get the power without the extras .

Re: OREGANO. Be careful with this. It can be really hard on the g.i. tract lining for those with sensitive stomachs. More than that, it depletes your iron levels. It IS good (also making a tea of the herb is good both for vapors and drinking), but you don't want to take it for long and want to be sure you're getting your meat (or other iron source).
