Re: anyone not giving babies animal products? need advice

I didn't give DD meat until recently. I couldn't stomach ground up meat, and I wanted to wait until she was able to really chew food. So, in the past month or so (since she turned 1) we've been introducing some meats. She's had little bits of pork, ham, hamburger, etc.

Should I buy ds vitamins even though his pedi said didn't need them? I'd be nervous trying something that wasn't suggested by her but then again she seems to have very different opinions. Im a ftm so I have no idea what I'm doing :/

Health Canada says iron-rich foods are important around 6 months, as babies' stores from birth could be used up by then. My nurse practitioner was on the medical committee that formed the recommendations. She knows I am vegetarian and says that soft tofu and mashed beans/lentils are good for LO.

My daughter is ebf now,but we will introduce solids in several days, when she is six months old. She gets vitamin D, but no other supplements.

I started giving our children vitamins when they turned 2, as directed by our doc and naturopath. That was if I felt it necessary because they don't give their kids supplements.
We eat exceptionally well so really there is not much need so it is just VitC and Omega 3

I second seeing a specialist if you are really wanting to not introduce any animal products. My son didn't really start on solids until 10 months (his choice) with the exception of yogurt and beans. He just wasn't interested. I will tell you that my WIC office told me to stop nursing at 6 months and I refused. So always double check what they tell you, especially if it makes you uncomfortable.

We did almost no animal products until 1, and few after. I don't think she had any meat until 18 months or more, and then only seafood and game meat until recently. We don't eat a lot of animal products, why should she?

In my house hold we don't really eat dairy products. With my LO I plan on making a lot of foods with fruit and veggies. I will be introducing different kinds of beans instead of meat. That should be fine while he is young. Then when he is older he can eat meat if he would like. I still need to look into how babies take different types of beans, but he should be fine. I don't know if you make your own baby food or buy it, but you can try making it to control what you put into the food as well.

Update: LO wasn't sure about tofu at first, but loved it mixed with her sweet potatoes. The next meal I started with it solo again, and she loved it. Lentils are next...

Food before one is just for fun. So technically you can avoid ALL other foods besides your milk.

We are meat eatters but my son was a vegan for the first few months of solid food. He was closer to 10m when i gave milk products and about a year before we did meat. We never did meat in babyfood form, yuck.
