Re: Need a thicker diaper cream
My son battled terrible blistering diaper rash for the first month of his life...I would have spent my whole day changing diapers, 50+ diapers a day just to keep poop off of his butt. I ended up stopping cloth until I could get it cleared up and the only thing that worked was calmoseptine.
There is nothing natural about it but it worked until his immature digestive system finally regulated. If you choose to try it, it is around $9 and you can get it at Walgreens (not sure that every pharmacy carries it) at the pharmacy counter.

Burts's Bees. May need a liner, but we didn't. CJ's Plus is also nice. You can always try straight zinc oxide if you just need a barrier cream. After it's healed, use CJs, Earth Mama Angel Baby or olive oil all the time as a preventative. Good luck!

My mom got me a brand I've never heard of, Tushy Derm. It works just as well as Desitin, but more natural ingredients. I use a fleece liner, but it doesn't seem to stain even those.
I also found using baby powder at every change helped too.

Re: Need a thicker diaper cream
Thanks so much ladies! I've started using lanolin until I can get either Grandma El's or Burt's Bees in! I really appreciate the recommendations

Re: Need a thicker diaper cream
My dh says that barrier creams don't work as well as cornstarch (he's a Pediatric specialist - NICU), so that's what we use. Ds had a rash at less than a week old, I think it is pretty typical once they start pooping and before their skin really transitions, and I was slathering him with cream, and it wasn't doing jack. So finally, dh told me I was not using the right product and we went out and got cornstarch with zinc in it. He says it's more drying than creams, and diaper rashes need to be kept very dry. And the rash cleared up within a couple of days and hasn't been back. I'm not going to use creams anymore. And I wish he'd said something when I was buying diaper creams.

Regular baby powder is dangerous if inhaled and not recommended. Be careful with cornstarch -- it can feed a yeast rash. We use California Baby and have used Burt's Bees in the past. BB felt slimy to me, so we've stuck w/CA baby for ~3 years and 3 kids including twins. I would want to rule out any underlying issues first though. Could it be yeast/thrush? Did you or baby receive antibiotics right after birth? Could baby be reacting to dairy or soy in your diet (if bfing) and/or formula you're using? If you are bfing, you can express a few drops and rub it on the rash, then air dry. Put baby on a cloth pre fold on the floor to catch any mess.
