Sadly I'd you don't get insurance as a buyer it is your responsibility as that is the purpose of it and USPS is notoriously rough with palaces. Even if they don't want to refund eBay/PayPal will make them.

The USPS requires items to be properly packaged. You would lose an insurance claim in such a situation.

Insurance is the seller's responsibility, not the buyer, as it's the seller they'd refund to. It is the seller's responsibility to make sure the item makes it to the buyer, so if they don't want to refund mishaps like this out of pocket, they need to insure their packages.

Re: Smashed package, who's responsible?

I would explain to the seller that the case was squashed, but fortunately protected the glasses. I would ask them to replace the case if they have another one or a similar one, or find out how much that particular case would cost and ask for a partial refund.

If they don't do anything, then contact PayPal and tell them the item was damaged in transit due to improper packaging and see what they say.

Good luck.
God bless!
