Re: How much do you pay for private insurance?

Currently, with a heart condition, you won't be able to get it. I had a blood clot one time and was denied and told I would never be able to be insured on the private health insurance market. They deny people for much smaller things than heart issues. Sad but true!

Now, whenever the Obamacare stuff takes effect, I believe they can no longer deny people for pre-existing conditions. But it is really hard to say what the prices will be at that point.

Check to see if your state has a high-risk insurance pool for those who are denied for insurance on the private market. I know our state does, when I looked into it, it was about 400-500/mo for coverage that wasn't that great.

Thank you for this! Oklahoma does have a high risk insurance pool. Like you said, it isn't great, but would definitely be better than not being insured. And it looks like it would fit in our budget.

Re: How much do you pay for private insurance?

We are VERY VERY lucky, my husband's company takes wonderful care of it's employees. Our health insurance premiums are very reasonable.

They went up slightly at the 1st of the year (usually does) so I think right now we're paying $137.50 every 2 weeks, so $275 or so a month. We're also lucky because They participate in a Wellness Credit and because according to their tests we're both healthy (normal weight, non smokers, good blood work, etc) we get $33 a month savings Otherwise our insurance would be over $300 a month.

Anyway, we have a $100 med deductible at the beginning of the year. $1500 per person, $3,500 family hospital deductible. They pay 100% of all well woman/well man/well child exams with $0 copay/$0 deductible. ER visits carry a $75 copay, Urgent Care a $50 copay, regular dr visits a $25 copay. Plus a 20% deductible. We're pretty lucky....and they cover my husband, no problem, despite his Type 1 diabetes, kidney failure and a whole host of other problems BUT it's through his employer, we've never tried to buy insurance on our own. I doubt we could.

Do you qualify for Medicaid? There are typically much higher income limits for pregnant women. Or does your state have a health insurance plan for 'sick' people? Here in Iowa we have IowaCare that covers people with health issues that can't get private insurance. It's a government program so there are income requirements but it's free/cheap.

DD and I are covered at $186/mo for medical. All of her well baby exams are free. Vaccinations are free, but I have to pay the $15 copay to get them done. I get one free wellness exam per year. My copay is $15 for my PCP, OB/GYN, and chiro. Specialists are $25. I think I have a $500 deductible for emergency stuff. My rx drug plan is decent. Generics are only $2. The next tier is around $15, then $30, and finally a max of $50 for a prescription med.

Dental for DH and I is about $50/mo. Two check ups and cleanings with xrays are free each year. They pay 80/20 now because I've had the coverage for three years. I think it started at only 50/50 the first year and then 70/30 the second. We've had no other dental work done. They pay $1000 max for orthodontics.

Vision for DH and I is about $30/mo. Eye exams are $4. We can choose to have a certain portion of either contact lenses or glasses covered each year. I think it's $75, which is basically 7-8 months of lenses for me. I haven't gotten glasses in several years. My last pair with frames, lenses, etc. was over $300!

I have a heart condition myself and am uninsurable even though I was cleared for natural delivery as well. Before I was denied due to that, we were quoted $500/mo with a $5000 deductible for just me. And they wouldn't cover any pregnancy related costs.

Re: How much do you pay for private insurance?

We pay 333 a month for crappy insurance for the girls and myself. DH couldn't get it without it being financially a heavy burden because he had a TBI from his tour in Iraq. Makes me so mad cause he can't be insured without a high cost but his army disability is so low it doesn't cover it. Whole other can of worms though.

Re: How much do you pay for private insurance?

Ours is about $1,000 a month for a family of five, no dental, no pregnancy coverage. We also pay $2500 ded. For one or $5,000 for family. It is super expensive. I tried to switch, but they denied me because I had a leep procedure for severe precancerous cells. They can still deny for pre existing conditions as the law hasn't taken effect yet.
