5 year old says her stomach hurts all the time...

Not sure why this has started happening--it's been going on the past 2 months. After her adenoid surgery (which went great and has helped a TON) and a bout with stomach flu (this flu ran thru our entire family), she has just never been the same. She doesn't eat as much, it's like her stomach shrunk with the flu and she gets full really fast and just doesn't finish, and often after she eats she says her stomach hurts. The other night in bed she said her stomach didn't feel good, and I got out of her that she felt nauseous but didn't need to throw up.

And her interest in food is just diminishing...foods she never had problems with and even enjoyed, she just doesn't like anymore. She will skip an entire meal rather than eat was isn't appetizing to her. Once in awhile this is fine, if your kid is eating good at other mealtimes, but she just doesn't get the calories she used to anymore. She has lost weight, and she already is a skinny mini. I wondered if she had developed a food allergy, but her stools are normal. Prior to her adenoid surgery we were doing food elimination diets and she didn't have dairy for almost a month--there was no change either way with it.

I try not to make a big deal of it--but it is frustrating and worrisome, and Im sure I convey that even though I try not to. I don't want to pressure her about it--im so freaked out about food issues and eating disorders, I don't want her to associate some kind of power in refusing to eat! She's only 5, but has a sensitive nature.

Any thoughts? Thanks for anything!

Start with some probiotics. If that doesn't help, take her to be checked out.

I was thinking probiotics as well. And maybe some ginger or gripe water.

I'm thinking proibotics too, the surgery and flu may have messed with her stomach flora.

Have her ped run some metabolic labs. You should just check to be sure that her lack of eating hasn't weakened her liver or kidneys (which is fairly easy to do at this age). Then discuss a better way for her to get nutrition dense foods so she can eat less but stay balanced. Have the doc refer you to a nutritionist to help get you started.

As long as she isn't lethargic, feverish, jaundiced or have soft or yellow stools, she should be ok for now, but getting a health status will make you feel better.

Thanks! I was just talking to my friend today, who is a doc, and she recommended probiotics as well...

I've been this way my whole life? And I mention it to my doctor all the time and not once have they mentioned probiotics. I read about them all the time but never considered them for myself. I think I will try them. It is/was so far to sit at the table as a kid and be totally disgusted and unable to eat or even want to eat. I'm sorry you DD is going through this. Food can be so good but I know what it is like to not have an appetite.

Have you taken her to the doctor for it? DS2 gets strep really easily and a sore tummy is his only sign. If he complains that his belly hurts for more than a couple days, it has been strep that every time. So frustrating so I can relate!
