Pros and Cons to Natural Fiber Inserts???
So, I have a new baby due in April, and my son is only diapered at night now. My stash which I will be reusing with my daughter is mainly BG, Charlie Banana, a few RaR's....all with the microfiber inserts they came with. While all the diapers still work fine, the inserts are a little dingy now and no major smell but they do retain odor quite easily. I had to strip about every 2 months or so.
I have always heard natural fibers don't retain smell. But are there disadvantages to switching my inserts to hemp/bamboo/cotton?? Any good ones you recommend to work with my dipes?? Also, is it best to get rid of MF alltogether? Or should I stuff with 1 mf, and 1 natural fiber?? thanks!

Re: Pros and Cons to Natural Fiber Inserts???
I can't comment since I'm due in may and this is our first but I will say I ordered a bunch of the alva baby bamboo inserts and they feel so much better then any of the microfiber ones I got with a bunch of the diapers I ordered. I'm seriously considering ordering a bunch and selling all the microfiber inserts! They fluffed up better after being prepped and just seem to be around better on inspection. I can't wait to use them!

Re: Pros and Cons to Natural Fiber Inserts???
I absolutely recommend ditching the mf inserts! I fought with them for 2 years before I tossed them all. Now I stuff all DS2's pockets with a folded flat and a hemp insert. No leaks, no stink, no stripping. Super easy. Plus another perk of using natural fibers is that you don't have to be so careful about cloth-friendly detergents. I still use Rockin' Green about half the time, but the other half I use Tide, which I find really helps with the staining.

Re: Pros and Cons to Natural Fiber Inserts???
I hate micro fiber! I fought with synthetic materials for about 3 months and then sold it all and replaced it with natural fibers. I do not have any insert suggestions, as we mostly use flats now, but I am all for natural fibers.

My 2 cents ... if you abhor laundry drama above all else, go with cotton!

Re: Pros and Cons to Natural Fiber Inserts???
I'm anti-microfiber due to stink, etc issues, too! I don't think there are any real drawbacks to natural fiber, IME, except my youngest ended up having reactions to hemp if it was directly against her skin. However, she was allergic to EVERYTHING as a baby & toddler. Thank goodness she has outgrow that now.

Re: Pros and Cons to Natural Fiber Inserts???
With my 2nd we replaced all our MF with bamboo and have never looked back. I could NOT get rid of the stink and was stripping the diaper all the time. I have stripped once in the 20 months of using bamboo due to me going too heavy on the ecover!
I would say they may take longer to dry than MF as a possible drawback. |
