Flats vs prefolds

I really like how easy prefolds are inside pockets & covers for an ai2 system

I bought some imagine bamboo flats because of all the rave reviews but not understanding the appeal of flats vs prefolds for pad folding?

Is it because they wash & dry easier? (I can see the benefit of this for sure!

Anything else I am missing?

Any links to ways to pad fold besides the modified kite one? (I'll bump it up but can't link bc on my phone

Re: Flats vs prefolds

Flats wash and dry SO easily! I keep a dozen flats in my emergency kit because they would be super easy to hand wash if necessary. They also come really clean because it's just one layer. Depending on the size of prefolds you have, flats are more trim.

Why I'm going with flats and covers after trying EVERYTHING else.

1. Cheap. Getting back to CD'ing to save money.
2. Wash super easy. I have soft water. The easier to wash and rinse clean, the better.
3. They are trimmer than prefolds, maybe because they don't quilt up? I always thought a pad-folded prefold seemed bulky, but a pad-folded flat seems much trimmer.
4. They are more customizable. I can fold them to get more layers of absorbency where I need it without completely doubling up like I had to do by folding over a prefold. Also, I don't have to buy multiple sizes like you do with prefolds.

ETA:
5. folding laundry is therapeutic for me. There is something very peaceful about folding flats. The dishes might not be done. But the flats will get folded.

I use flats. For me it is a trimmer option...even if I don't use the modified flat fold. I had way more 2x4 butt with prefolds...and like you mentioned they are harder to get clean.

Re: Flats vs prefolds

You're right, a lot of it is how easy they are to wash and dry.

The other is how easily you can use them in many, many, many ways. The end result is usually more trim than a prefold in certain spots too.

In my sig is my favorite fold for stuffing pockets or laying in covers. Even with 2 flats inside a Flip it's more trim than any other solution I've found with equal absorbency.

Need to check this out on the computer!

Here is a fold I tried. Don't know if it will work but will try after they are fully prepped. Want to give them a fair chance!

Folded into a triangle

Long ends folded in

Tail folded in

Then folded in half to create a pocket insert

Just an idea to try out.

Re: Flats vs prefolds

I have both prefolds and flats in my stash and while i have a love for both i really love flats way more. They are so simple and versitile (my fav way to use flats are pad folded in a flip but i also use them in all my pockets and i am branching out and trying different folds!) and a true "one size" cloth diaper that will last through lots of babies. They are cheaper, wash and dry sooo much easier and they are more trim than any prefold I have tried. I DESPISE stuffing pockets but I like folding flats

3. How easy they are to wash and hang dry
4. The simplicity
