Coming from a very strict clean your plate family, i still have issues with this as an adult! We have decided not to do this with our children, but hate wasting food. Our back up plan, as we both HATE wasting food, we give it to the dog! There is no waste, literally she will eat anything except lettuce and mushrooms, and everyone is happy! I know this doesn't work for everyone, but the conscience is clear at our home :-)

Re: Getting over wasted food

I agree with very small portions, and then she can always ask for more. My husband has a HUGE issue with wasting food, but I try to look at it as once it is on their plate it's gone, it's either going in their stomach or the trash, so there is no reason to worry about it once it's on their plate. Either way, it's not going back in with the leftovers.

We don't give seconds of anything unless they have at least tried what is on their plate though, so no seconds of pasta if they didn't touch their veggies. They don't have to eat everything, but before they get more, they have to at least try it.
