do you can?
for those that can, I was just given a pressure cooker that our . cousin found in her barn. there were bands in there that I want to use since they have never been used, but feel sticky on the rubber, my frugal side wants to use them, my fear of food poisoning says no. how do I know if they are safer to use. the boxes say .15 cents, so they have to be 30 plus yrs old. not all feel sticky of are stuck to one another either. I think being in the barn all these yrs did it the band's are what you use with the jars and screw things, just can't remember their rreal name

Re: do you can?
Not if I can help it
. I can pears, but that is it (because they are soooooo good).Canning takes a lot of time and there are a lot of steps. There is boiling water involved, a risk of contamination, and most of the nutrients present in the food are denatured or destroyed due to the high heat. I freeze pretty much everything. Tomatoes, cooked beans, cooked rice, all sorts of veggies, broth, sauces, soups, berries, basically anything that can be canned except fruit (because it gets mushy upon thawing). I use plastic freezer jars instead of ziplock bags so they can go in the dishwasher and then be reused. I am very lazy

Re: do you can?
Pressure canners cost $80+ dollars depending on quality and if you get them on sale. Free is always nice! I would find out what kind it is and replace all seals before useing it as a pressure canner. (It can be dangerous as it could leak out hot steam/water and burn you!)
If you can't figure out how to get replacement seals it would always work to water bath jellies, pickles, or tomatoes. (you just boil them with no pressure)

Re: do you can?
I can any and everything in sight, LOL. Now, you say pressure cooker... there is a difference between a pressure cooker and a pressure canner. There are some pressure canners that you can also pressure cook in (I have one), but you can't can (lol) in a pressure cooker!
