To make a sterilizing solution for household use, Dr. Norman Miner (one of the study researchers) recommends first diluting 1 oz (30 ml) of household bleach in one gallon (3.8 L) of tap water and then adding 1 oz (30 ml) of 5% distilled white vinegar.
I'm interested in the source for this because I've always used vinegar at home and bleach at school. I had never thought of mixing them.

Don't mix vinegar and bleach, makes chlorine gas. Besides, if you're using a bleach solution, you definitely don't need anything else.

PP, That's what I was thinking, I never heard of mixing bleach and vinegar. I don't know ffom experience but it sounds awful! I would use one or the other. I know you said you had to use bleach or something that is a disinfectant. Can you use vinegar in between and bleach every two weeks? I think you said something about every two weeks before per gov't standards?

I did not know mixing them was dangerous. I thought that was ammonia you chouldn't mix with bleach. But, yes, I just looked it up and apparently it does also create chlorine gas. Dang! Sorry!

Apparently it will only create gas if you add more than they say:

"Warning: Do not add more vinegar than recommended to bring the pH of the sanitizing solution down to 6.0. Because when the solution pH is between 4 and 5 it is very corrosive to metals. And when the bleach solution is dropped below pH 4.0, deadly chlorine gas is formed. "

I think oxygen bleach works, but I don't have any documentation to back it up. I often use 3% hydrogen peroxide as a fume free alternative to bleach.

This is what I was thinking...Seventh Gen makes a spray disinfectant using thyme oil - the same ingredient in Cleanwell (they make hand spray cleaner that is alcohol and triclosan free). It states that it kills 99.9% of germs and effective against Influenza A virus including H1N1, and Rhinovirus, the Common Cold virus. I would think this would be adequate, and I feel safer using it.
