SO glad I've been putting money away for winter utilities!

We got our gas bill today...yikes. Not as high as some houses or some areas...but still it was about 175% of last month. So glad I've been putting aside money for such an occasion!

I just switched ours over to a level payment plan--is that an option for you? I could enroll right from our gas co website, but I will have to call to do the same for electricity. So much easier on our budget to be able to pay the same each month. Ours reevaluates every 6 months, and then will adjust up or down according to usage.

yeah that's why we switched over to level pay. the first month we started using heat the bill bumped up $40. i didnt want to get stuck paying a $240 utility bill again (water, sewer, gas, electric) so even though spring and fall it's typical around $120 we are just paying $161 year round

We do the level or budget pay to. Ours went down a ton when I started washing all of our clothes in cold water.

Re: SO glad I've been putting money away for winter utilities!

I figure putting money away like I have been is pretty much like having a level payment plan. I have the discipline to set the money aside in the cheaper months so it works out ok. I just hope I didn't underestimate too much because last winter was SO mild here.

I usually set aside money because I would rather have the money throughout the rest of the year for stuff like car repairs. To heat our 1789 sqft house with gas it is about $100 extra for about 4 months. We have these old gas wall heaters. Usually the one in the dining room heats the area where I sit most the day so I don't use the one in the living room corner too much.

Re: SO glad I've been putting money away for winter utilities!

I need to look into level pay! Our power bill is pretty close to $100 a month in the summer, and almost $300 in the winter. Ouch. Our most recent one was $238, and typically the next 2 are higher, so I"m definitely cringing.

Slowly but surely we're working on upgrades to our really old house to make it more energy efficient. Currently trying to revamp the fireplace so it isn't so drafty.
