Re: Update! What comprises "unnecessary" prenatal care?
Basically all of the tests are unnecessary. You need to talk to your OB.

Re: Update! What comprises "unnecessary" prenatal care?
I always had to sign extra consent forms for the Downs testing, if I wanted the blood draws for genetic disorders, etc. I've never heard of those being mandatory, even with the strictest of policies. One office did mandatory blood draws every visit, annoyed the crap out of me. The office I switched to, just had you pee in a cup. Beyond that, it was all optional (and I could've refused even that). I did the GD test, but it wasn't required.

Re: Update! What comprises "unnecessary" prenatal care?
Gestational diabetes has NOTHING to do with diet, it is completely hormone related. FYI, you can have a perfect diet and still have issues with it regardless, that is why they do the glucose tolerance test, it's not about what you eat it's about how your hormones get in the way of your insulin
ETA: I know this because I have it, I was diagnosed at 12 weeks based on my blood draws and have researched the hell out of it, it can be diet controlled but it is something that I would say is a bad idea to completely skip the testing on. Last edited by mizzStephylynn; 01-20-2013 at 02:28 AM. |

Re: Update! What comprises "unnecessary" prenatal care?
I would look at your state, as each is different. I didn't do the anio and anything related to baby like down syndrome testing. There are some life factors that help contribute to those disabilities if you will.
I still check thyroid as I was hyper with first and after the initial with the second nothing and now apparently hypo in the last with third (girl , girl , and boy if that makes a difference). I did glucose for all. I did the HIV with I think all 3 just like the testing of breast milk some are just preventative/proactive to keep baby safe (back story of breast milk the gal donated then came down with cancer in a few months after so totally on board with every I think about 3 months retesting). I was on title 19 for first and not for the rest.I don't feel as I was pushed into anything either way. I just know with my first we did stuff a bit more cautiously as I didn't find out til 20 weeks that I was pregnant. I ended up with more ultrasounds and prescription for prenatals. |

It doesn't matter what insurance you have, any medical test is YOUR choice. Even the one "required by state law" can be opted out of 99% of the time. Get a list of every routine prenatal test and lab test, and then research each one and the pros and cons of each. Your provider is required to give you this information and seek INFORMED CONSENT before performing any medical test or procedure.
