Do you have to double diaper/use inserts with flats that are snappied?

Love my prefolds but would like to try flats. But I've read that some people have to double diaper or use an insert to make them absorbent enough. And for me I guess that defeats the purpose of trying to save a little more money if I have to use twice as many.

I definetely prefer to snappy and not padfold. So...what's your experience? TIA!!

I think it depends on the flat, the fold and how heavy of a wetter you have. I like the oragami or Jo fold and if I need more absorbency I just tuck a small booster in. We only use flats at home though so no need to add anything usually.

Like previous poster said it depends on baby, the flat, and the fold.

When we started using flats one was enough. Now he is 19 months old we have to add absorbancy. I think if we had the bigger flats(we have mostly imagine) we wouldn't need to add absorbency. We also have some receiving blankets I use just for fun. With those I don't need anything added in.

Aside from cheaper they are easier to wash and quicker to dry. We can also go more time in-between washing as the flats even with doublers take up less space. I am then able to fit more in my washer. When using flats I wash every 3 days. When using prefolds or fitteds I wash every 2 days. Because flats are so easy to clean the extra time in-between doesn't cause any laundry issues.

I only use a cotton doubler for naps (if I remember!), if we are out of the house, or if I use them for nights I use a flat plus a prefold. As long as I change every couple hours I can pin/snappi a flat without any "extras". I use GMD smalls and receiving blanket flats either kite folded or pad folded. I loved the origami fold until DS outgrew the rise. Eventually I'll get GMD larges and will do origami folds again. DS is a year old and an average wetter.

Thanks ladies! I think I'll order some GMD larges and just give it a try and see how it goes!
