I have been playing around with this as well. I think the flats are trimmer pad folded into pockets. Prefolds seem to have a little more "structure" to them so slightly bulkier (slightly!). The flats seem to squish more making them trimmer IMO

I use both infant sized PFs and flats to stuff. The flats are definitely trimmer. If I'm comparing my GMD flats to prefolds, I find the absorbency is about the same, but with flour sack flats, I'd have to double them to get the same absorbency as my GMD flats. I love the flour sack towels for doublers and for testing the waters before buying a lot of flats, but their absorbency doesn't compare to the GMDs. My receiving blanket flats seem to be just as absorbant as "real" flats though, especially the circo ones from Target. Love those

Flats are definitely trimmer, but I think my prefolds may be a touch more absorbent.
