Are you low water immersion dyeing? As far as I understand, you only soak in soda ash prior to dyeing when you are swirl dyeing.

Mix your soda ash with your dye (the apply to damp fabric)......you want it to react the second it touches the fabric. That's how you get the variations and no muddy colors

Also let your dye sit. I do mine for 24 hours or so. make sure your fabric is soaked.
