I preferred a stroller, people tend to give you a ( albeit still small) little bit more berth with a stroller, vs complete lack of personal space with a carrier as people don't tend to realize you have a babe. We always took cabs, I'm not a subway person.

Also, just in case you don't think about it. A well fitting backpack diaper bag is a must for babywearing in the city, especially without a stroller.
